2020 Bordeaux En Primeur: Almost Back to Normal (Jun 2021)

The 2020 La Serre offers plenty of immediacy. Blueberry, spice, new leather, tobacco and cedar give the 2020 its effusive personality. Bright acids lend quite a bit of energy. The tannins feel just a bit coarse. That is the only thing holding the 2020 back from a slightly more positive note.

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

Sweet tobacco, licorice, cedar and red stone fruits run through the 2014 La Lagune. Medium in body and silky on the palate, the wine offers lovely balance in an understated style. This is quite pretty.

Mother & Child: La Lagune 1962 – 2015 (Apr 2018)

The 2014 La Lagune has a tightly wound bouquet that may have closed down since I last tasted it. It begins to open with blackberry, graphite and wet limestone scents, quite strict and focused, but very well defined and showing great clarity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, and density with a little chalkiness…

The 2020 La Clotte was picked 14-30 September and matured in barriques for 18 months. This has a gorgeous and expressive bouquet with beautifully defined red fruit, crushed stone, wilted rose petal and a touch of sea spray. It is extremely focused with seamlessly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied and silky smooth. Finely tuned…

Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 La Clotte exudes depth and is intensely packed with dark red cherry, plum and blood orange fruit. Today, La Clotte is incredibly primary, with terrific fruit density but less in the way of aromatic complexity. That’s probably a very good thing for its long-term prospects, but readers will have to be patient. It…

Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)

The 2020 La Clotte comes from a small 4-hectare estate, rapidly becoming one of the Vauthier family’s most coveted crus. This is another in the canon of outstanding recent vintages. It offers a mixture of red and black fruit, pain d’épices and crushed stone, gaining complexity with aeration while remaining very cohesive. The palate is…
