Mouton Rothschild: 2003-2015 (May 2016)

The 2006 Mouton Rothschild is dark, powerful and intense, with firm tannins that need time to soften. This is an especially dark, somber Mouton. Dark black fruit, smoke, menthol gravel and cured meats are some of the signatures. Slight vegetal notes underpin the fruit. I am not sure the 2006 has enough freshness to be…

The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Bright ruby-red. Vibrant aromas of cassis, blueberry, cedar and graphite. Wonderfully pure and silky in the mouth, with great subtle, slow-building intensity and superb energy and thrust. A real essence of cabernet sauvignon and Mouton terroir This one really rattled my brain-in the gentlest way. As silky as it is, it possesses bottomless depths. Finishes…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Good medium ruby . Reticent aromas of black cherry and licorice. Bright, tight and high-pitched, with very fresh flavors of dark fruits and flowers currently dominated by firm tannic spine. A bit youthfully tough and in need of at least several years of cellaring.

The 2008 Clarets (Jul 2011)

Good bright red-ruby. Complex nose melds dark fruits, licorice, flowers, mint, camphor and medicinal herbs. Youthfully clenched and seriously structured wine, with sweet dark berry fruit currently dominated by solid tannins. Quite backward and long on the aftertaste. Lay this one down.

Bordeaux ’08: Far Better Than Expected (May 2009)

Deep inky ruby. Lovely, aromatic nose combines dark spicy plum, pine and balsamic vinegar. Quite suave on entry, then densely packed and vibrant, with mouthcoating flavors of blackberry, blueberry jam and licorice. Finishes with ripe, integrated but still noticeable tannins and a lingering violet perfume. Always a supple, flamboyant wine, this seems to be a…

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Réserve de la Comtesse has a tight, broody bouquet that feels a little thin compared to its peers in this flight. Red berry fruit, brown spices and iron filing scents only reluctantly emerge, gradually adding weight and in the end the aromatics are very satisfying. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and…
