Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 1921-2016 (Oct 2017)

The 1966 Pichon Lalande possesses remarkable depth and pure power. A slight element of cork suggests this bottle might not be perfect, but the textural depth and intensity for a 51 year-old wine are truly remarkable. This bottled was re-corked at the château in 1986.

Exploring the Santa Cruz Mountains (Oct 2019)

The 1999 Monte Bello is gorgeous wine for current drinking, as all the elements have melded together nicely with the passage of time. Cedar, smoke, leather and dried herbs give the 1999 wonderful aromatic presence. Overall, though, I find the wine’s sheer depth to be really impressive. Moreover, the 1999 is aging very gracefully.

Magic and Madness: Climens 1912-2020 (Aug 2022)

The 1937 Climens is a vintage that I have tasted twice within days of each other. It has a paler colour than expected with dried honey, melted candle wax and dried apricot, not dissimilar to a Tokaji in many ways. Quite well-defined. The palate is fresh with a taut line of acidity, notes of tangerine…

The Cat’s Whiskers: Bordeaux 1961 (Oct 2019)

The 1961 Léoville Las-Cases is a wine that I have not tasted for quite some time, although I have several notes from the last decade. This is unquestionably the best bottle that I have encountered. It has a show-stopping, lively bouquet with black fruit, bay leaf and cedar, light mulch aromas developing with time. I…

Vintage Port – The 2016 Declaration (Jun 2018)

The 1963 Taylor’s Vintage Port is lucid in colour, very well defined with wild strawberry, Clementine, leather and tobacco scents, one of the few to contain a floral element. The palate has a cashmere texture with wild strawberry, cherry and a touch of liquorice, leading to a dense and structured finish. Over several bottles encountered,…

Vinous Table: The Sportsman, Kent, UK (Sep 2022)

Next came a 1970 Léoville Barton. Predating Anthony Barton, this was not an auspicious era for one of my favourite Saint-Julien estates. With rusty old nails on the nose and a touch of chlorophyll, this lacks the cohesion of its peers. The palate is better with decent weight, surprisingly sweet (maybe chaptalized?) fruit, nice balance,…
