The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Good full medium ruby. Superripe, exotic aromas of roasted currant, smoked meat and cocoa powder. Sweet, lush and silky, with compelling depth of texture and an intriguing gamey note. Very long finish features lush tannins.

Bordeaux’s Radiant 2015s (Apr 2016)

The 2015 Citran is hearty and a bit rough around the edges, with good fruit intensity but four-square, chunky tannins that give the wine its distinctly rustic personality.

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Good medium ruby. Aromatic nose combines crystallized blackberry, cassis, shoe polish and mint. Tight, firm and rather ungiving in the mouth, with moderately ripe, muscular flavors of cassis, licorice and shoe polish. Doesn’t quite deliver the flavor interest promised by the nose.

The Comedown: Bordeaux 2011 Ten-Years-On (Apr 2022)

The 2011 La Chapelle de la Mission feels a little flat and tired on the nose compared to its peers. The palate is fleshy and rounded with grainy tannins, the finish balanced with a savoury finish. Not bad, though I prefer the Clarence by comparison. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

2011 Bordeaux from the Bottle (Jul 2014)

Bright red. Blackberry and strawberry on the nose. Strong acidity gives this wine a slightly tart quality but there’s also good clarity and floral lift to the red fruit flavors. Closes on a vanilla note, with good length and soft tannins. No green or harsh elements here at all but ultimately this is a very…

The DBs: Bordeaux 2016 In Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Certan de May was disappointingly skinny when I tasted it from barrel. It has put on weight during its élevage, as one expects, but trust me, this is not up there with the greatest wines from Certan de May. The bouquet is pleasant but does not go that extra mile, coming across a…
