2011 Red Burgundy: Three Sides of a Coin (Mar 2014)

The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux is bright, focused and absolutely impeccable in its balance. Black cherry, plum, mint and spice notes are supported by beams of minerality that add tension. The Champeaux is a model of understatement and balance.

2011 Red Burgundies (Mar 2014)

Bright, medium red. Subtle aromas and flavors of redcurrant, tobacco, spices and smoke. A juicy, sexy midweight; a step up in texture and length from the Chambolle, with an intriguing earthy, gamey perfume nicely supported by sound acidity and firm tannins. Finishes with a lingering note of mocha.

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2000 Gruaud Larose is a vintage that I have not tasted for some 10 years. It has a somehow sedate bouquet of dark red berry fruit, cola and tobacco scents, ever so slightly smudged with age. Bright ruby. Liqueur-like aromas of roasted black raspberry, leather and grilled nuts. Lush, sweet and thick, with an almost unctuous texture and terrific volume. A wine of compelling sweetness and chewiness, not to mention sheer mouthfilling size. Finishes with huge, broad, sweet tannins and lingering notes of blackcurrant, coffee and leather. Classic, thoroughly ripe Gruaud-Larose.

Brilliance in the Santa Cruz Mountains (Jul 2016)

The 2013 Pinot Noir de Villiers Vineyard is intense, pure and brilliant. Dark red cherry, blood orange, lavender, mint, star anise and wild flowers give the de Villiers an exotic edge in this vintage. Plush and deep on the palate, the 2013 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Sweet floral and…

Sonoma’s Sensational 2015s (Mar 2017)

A huge, opulent wine, the 2014 La Muse wraps around the palate with tons of super-ripe dark red fruit, chocolate, spice and menthol. La Muse often shuts down after bottling, but the 2014 is still remarkably intense and voluptuous, with soft contours, silky tannins and exceptional balance. The purity of the flavors here is remarkable.
