Bordeaux 2012: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (May 2013)

(90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc; 80% new oak): Deep ruby. Exceptionally pure aromas of fresh blackcurrant, blueberry, minerals, violet and sweet spices. Sweet, suave and dense, with highly refined flavors of red berries, blackberry and cinnamon, and an impression of sucrosité that is truly unforgettable. The finish is long and delicately peppery, with lingering…

1999 and 1998 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2001)

Bright saturated ruby. Confectionery aromas of cherry liqueur and roasted meat. A wine of extraordinary density; incredibly thick but, in comparison to the basic ’98 Beaucastel bottling, this has more shoulders. More black fruits than red. Finishes with great, lush tannins and explosive berry and cocoa powder flavors. Among the longest wines of my tour…

Opus One – Past, Present and Future: 1979-2012 (Jun 2013)

The 1993 Opus One is a wine of pure impact. The fruit is front and center in this bold, juicy Cabernet Sauvignon. Slight elements of brett detract from the wine’s balance, but the 1993 has enough depth to drink well for at least another decade, if not considerably longer. The blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon,…

The 1990 Clarets…To Have and To Hold (Nov 1993)

Moderately saturated medium color. Awkward nose combines a floral Margaux quality and faintly rustic stewed fruit and prune aromas. Ripe, sweet fruit is atypically forward for this wine, though the acidity is adequate, finishes with modest tannins.

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Lynch-Bages (Jan 2012)

(4.8 g/l total acidity; 13 % alcohol): Dark ruby-red. Delicate aromas of dark berries, incense, sandalwood, grilled meat, smoke and black pepper. The palate offers simple flavors similar to the aromas, showing good balance and easy quaffability but lacking the depth and concentration of the better vintages. Finishes with smooth tannins and modest length.

1995 and 1994 Bordeaux (May 1996)

1994 Lynch-Bates: Sappy cherry, earth and spice aromas, with sweet resiny oak and mineral notes. Sweet and supple in the mouth, particularly tasted next to the Pichon-Baron, but still a ’94 of only average ripeness. Strong cherry flavor in the mouth. Some menthol on the back end is reminiscent of California cabernet. Lacks real Pauillac…
