The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Good full ruby-red. Knockout nose combines blackberry, violet, espresso, graphite and licorice. Then impressively sweet in the mouth, even slightly roasted; comes across as rather aggressive following the leaner, high-pitched 2002. Extremely rich, full Palmer but a bit brutal today, and not currently showing the perfume it displayed from barrel. The wine’s substantial but ripe…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Full medium ruby. Aromatic nose combines blueberry, violet, bitter chocolate and mint. Juicy and bright, with a creamy core but a firm shell of fruit. Bright, harmonious acids and rather suave tannins give this wine good underlying structure. A classic, Medoc style of Giscours, with a persistent, subtle aftertaste. May well fill out in barrel.

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Deep, bright ruby-red. Deeply pitched aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, leather, smoked meat, earth and menthol. Chewy, brooding and deep, with concentrated black cherry, menthol, mineral and leather flavors framed by a powerful spine of acids and tannins. Really saturates the palate on the tannic back end. I’d give this classic St. Estephe a…

Purple Reign: La Conseillante 1966-2015 (May 2018)

The 2006 La Conseillante has a surprisingly rich and opulent bouquet that might lack complexity but goes for sheer hedonism. Mulberry, hints of fresh fig and prune, this is a La Conseillante that has avowed not to be outshone by the previous two vintages, though you can argue that it accomplishes that in rather obvious…

The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Bright ruby-red. Sexy nose combines dark berries, violet, cedar, mocha, truffle and smoky oak. Plush, succulent and sweet, but with lovely delineation to the pliant black cherry and raspberry flavors. At once opulent and vibrant, finishing with a fine dusting of tannins and compelling sweetness. This has an almost Burgundian texture reminiscent of some of…

Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

(90% merlot with 10% cabernet franc) Deep ruby-purple; much darker than La Petite Eglise. Enticing floral nose offers refined, delicate aromas of cassis, spicy dried herbs, coffee and violet. Dense and round but juicy in the mouth, with bright black fruit and underbrush flavors nicely lifted by lively acidity. This has a captivating seamless quality…
