Bordeaux 2018: Not Back in Black (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Clos L'Eglise is dense and powerful to the core. The tannins are equally forbidding, suggesting the 2018 is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Heat and mildew resulted in an unusually deep Clos L'Eglise. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, licorice, spice and gravel open with a bit of…

Bols Blue to Bordeaux: Barde-Haut, Clos l’Église & Poesia (Jun 2022)

Just a few weeks after my round of in-bottle tastings, the 2018 Clos l’Eglise replicates its performance at the property. The bouquet is bright and vivacious with raspberry and crushed strawberry, those mocha, dark chocolate and espresso scents present but politely waiting in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. The acidity is…

The Future’s Definitely Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Clos l’Eglise has an open, expressive bouquet of brambly red fruit, crushed strawberry and raspberry, intermixed with dark chocolate and espresso scents. It certainly repays 90 minutes to really open. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained and quite strict tannins that lend it more linearity than the Barde-Haut tasted alongside (also owned by…

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Clos l'Eglise is beautifully layered and complete. Scents of dark cherry, plum, chocolate and licorice all build effortlessly. This mid-weight yet potent, Pomerol is nuanced and super-expressive, with gorgeous silkiness on the long finish to keep things in balance. It is a terrific effort from Hélène Garcin-Lévêque and Patrice Lévêque.

Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Clos l’Eglise has an attractive nose with blackberry, soy and cracked black pepper, a little earthier than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, good depth and grip. Slightly peppery towards the finish, it needs bottle age to demonstrate the complexity and precision it displayed after bottling. Tasted blind at…

Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Clos l’Eglise has a beautiful bouquet of vivacious red berry fruit and suggestions of truffle and salted licorice, very focused and vibrant and gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy, saturated tannins, a fine bead of acidity, and hints of licorice furnishing the finish. There is a sense of completeness…
