The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

Bright red-ruby. Pure aromas of raspberry, violet and minerals. Suave and supple but classically dry, with an enticing floral character throughout. Very stylish, smooth wine, with tannins nicely buffered by berry fruit.

Vinous Lockdown Special (Oct 2020)

The 2013 Chateau Musar is bold, punchy and intensely perfumed. Rose petal, ripe red fruit, sage, mint, cinnamon and sweet tobacco give the 2013 a very strong aromatic presence that continues to build. Medium in body, with lovely red fruit character, the 2013 Musar could use a few years in bottle to fully come together….

New Languedoc/Roussillon Releases (Jul 2002)

(a blend of syrah, mourvedre and cabernet) Full red. An exotic head shop of a nose: blackberry, orange peel, roasted meat, mace, clove, grilled nuts. Then extremely intensely flavored and dense with extract; combines an almost confectionary late-harvest sweetness with bracing acid structure. Distinctly peppery, salty finish, like steak au poivre Laurent Vaille told me…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Eights (May 2018)

The 1988 Mouton-Rothschild is a vintage that I have not tasted for several years (although it was a regular fixture during the 2000s). It is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Showing some signs of bricking on the rim, it has certainly matured with a little…

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Richebourg Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet that expands with aeration (in this case, while I talked with Jean-Nicolas Méo about jogging). Presenting a mixture of red and black fruit, crushed stone and hints of violet and iris, this is a multifaceted bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied and very different: much more structured,…

Champagne: So Much More Than a Celebration Wine (Oct 2012)

Krug’s 1998 Brut Vintage is an excellent choice for drinking today, as the classic Krug style is rich, alive and totally vivid. Honey, almonds, smoke, graphite and dried apricots are some of the many aromas and flavors found in this rich, enveloping Champagne. A wine of texture and depth, the 1998 impresses for its vinous…
