Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Clerc-Milon has a modest bouquet with blackberry and sous-bois aromas, perhaps missing the intensity of some of its peers in this flight. Pencil box scents emerge with aeration to add a little complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, classic Pauillac really with cedar and mint towards the brisk and defined finish….

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Moderately saturated ruby-red. Expressive, complex aromas of cassis, dark chocolate, cedar, lead pencil, tobacco and fresh herbs. Velvety and fine-grained in the mouth, with energetic dark fruit flavors accented by flowers, cedar and fresh herbs. Finishes with ripe tannins and excellent sneaky length. I like the impression of sheer size and fresh fruit.

Cellar Journal: Bordeaux 1920-2015 (Dec 2019)

The 2005 Cheval Blanc has a very intense bouquet, conveying so much energy that it almost knocks you sideways. That strong marine influence remains, the aromatics have opened up since I last tasted it. The palate is medium-bodied with firm backbone, yet more pliant than previous bottles, offering dense black fruit laced with mint and…

2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Cheval Blanc has been nothing less than magical on two separate occasions. A wine of breathtaking nuance and sophistication, the 2005 Cheval dazzles right out of the gate. With a few hours of aeration the aromatics blossom and the wine is explosive in every dimension. Espresso, rose petal, mint, blood orange and incense…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

($1; 800-$2,000) Good deep ruby-red. Knockout nose offers terrific vinosity to the aromas of dark raspberry, mocha, minerals, licorice, menthol and dark chocolate. Lush, fat and suave, with superb energy and lift to the fine-grained, palate-staining flavors. Despite its rather high 14% alcohol, this boasts near-perfect balance and finishes with outstanding verve. A great vintage…

2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Medium red-ruby. Plum, currant, brown spices, leather and tobacco leaf on the nose, along with some smoky oak. Distinctly firm and herbal but with a sweetly spicy quality to the flavors of cassis, lead pencil and tobacco leaf. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and a repeating herbal note.
