The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

Deep red-ruby. Enticing aromas of roasted plum, currant, graphite and smoky oak. Precise, spicy and juicy; more herbal than the 2002 or 2003 but also very intensely flavored and not at all hard. This very long, pure Latour seems to be shutting down today.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

Good bright ruby-red. Sweet, penetrating aromas of raspberry, currant, flowers and sweet oak. Tight today but not hard, with burnished oak notes sweetening the dark berry and floral flavors. Finishes long and firmly tannic, with cabernet-dominated floral and minty notes.

Margaux Focus 2: Château Palmer (Aug 2023)

The 2002 Palmer has a well-defined bouquet with smudged red fruit, melted tar, dark chocolate and mint. This has held up well over two decades, but it is missing some of Palmer’s DNA. The palate is medium-bodied, simple yet balanced, with fine acidity and firm tannins. It lacks some vigor and comes across as rather…

Taittinger: Comtes de Champagne 1971— 1998 (Aug 2010)

The 1994 Comtes de Champagne (magnum) shows lovely richness in burnished tones of apricots, spices and flowers. Soft, seamless and opulent, the fruit caresses the palate in a rich, up-front style. This isn’t the most powerful Comtes but it is among the most rewarding vintages to enjoy today and over the next decade.

Focus on Champagne (Nov 2001)

Pale but bright color. Very subtle, complex nose combines lime, lemon, orange peel, ginger, wet stone and mint. Very fine, persistent mousse. Expansive and dense on the palate, but quite fresh and dry. Wonderfully complex and subtle. Finishes brisk, strong and very long. Doesn’t have quite the depth of the greatest vintages, but this is…

Passing the Baton: Lynch-Bages 1945-2018 (Jul 2023)

The 1998 Lynch-Bages shows less aging, and the fruit here is darker and more compact than others in this era: blackberry, wild hedgerow, cedar and a touch of wild mint. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannins, blackberry, briary, iron rust and an underlying bitterness that just dries out the finish a little. This…
