A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The 2002 Haut-Bages Libéral has a slight lactic, chocolaty bouquet with white truffles emerging with time. It feels a little smudged. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins, solid and austere. You wish there was more fruit and flesh on the finish but it is not going to give it to you. Rustic and a…

1999, 1998 and 1997 Bordeaux (May 2000)

Medium ruby. Spicy aromas of cassis and bitter chocolate. Rather rigid and uncompromising today but there’s good density here and firm underlying structure. The bones are showing now but this firmly tannic wine shows very good persistence. This should benefit substantially from its elevage.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

(a blend of 52% cabernet sauvignon, 42% merlot and 6% petit verdot) Ruby-red. Aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, leather, game and dark chocolate. Pliant and smooth, with a rather fine-grained texture for a young wine from this chateau. Doesn’t possess the definition or lift of the best 2004 St. Juliens, but has a solid…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

(a 60/40 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Good ruby-red. Sexy aromas of currant, black cherry, licorice, flowers, toffee, menthol and chocolatey oak. Juicy, pure and fairly tightly wound, with lovely acidity giving a briskness to the flavors. Finishes with good definition and grip, and a slight dry edge.

Vintage Port – The 2016 Declaration (Jun 2018)

The 1970 Taylor’s Vintage Port has a tight nose, youthful with notes of liquorice, raisin, boot-polish and lemongrass. It is well defined and displays a little more intensity than the 1963. The palate is full-bodied with firm tannins, very cohesive with superb ripeness: wild strawberry, lemongrass, smoke and dates with an incredibly persistent finish. There…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

(a 73/27 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Bright ruby-red. Blackcurrant, blueberry, black cherry, violet, tobacco, fresh herbs and currant leaf on the slightly medicinal, quintessential cabernet nose. Then broad, fat and rich, with a layered texture and enticing sweetness. Showing its cabernet side today, but this is thoroughly ripe, seamless cabernet.
