Vingt-Vingt Vins: Bordeaux 2020 (May 2021)

The 2020 Bellevue-Mondotte was picked on September 23 at just 18hl/ha and matured in 90% new oak and 10% one-year-old barrels. It has a very intense nose of Dorset plum, black currant and quite potent marine, almost briny aromas; it kind of bludgeons your olfactory senses. The medium-bodied palate features sappy black fruit laced with…

Vingt-Vingt Vins: Bordeaux 2020 (May 2021)

The 2020 Bellevue-Mondotte was a bit of a “bruiser” when I tasted the sample bottle sent to the UK, despite affording it as much aeration as I could allow. Re-examining the sample at Pavie, the wine demonstrates much more composure and refinement, therefore it deserves a higher score.

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Deep ruby-red color. More expressive aromas of crystallized dark berries, dark chocolate and animal fur. Lush and sweet; thick but delineated. Wonderfully concentrated. This, too, seems rather withdrawn today, but the strength of material is clear to see. Finishes with firm tannins and explosive fruit that goes on and on.

From Domesday to Now: Nyetimber (Sep 2021)

The 2003 Blanc de Blancs was bottled in spring 2004 and disgorged in August 2013. Like the 2001, this did not go through malo, as was the practice at the time. It has a similar nose to the 2001, very citric and maybe a little one-dimensional compared to earlier vintages. The palate is better balanced…

Through the Other Side: Burgundy 2016 in Bottle (Oct 2019)

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a delightful bouquet with redcurrant, cranberry, mint and light dried rose petal aromas, so elegant that you can almost miss the aromatic intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is a fine bead of acidity here, lithe in texture, building in volume towards quite a weighty and persistent…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(two-thirds of a normal crop; includes the Chambolle-Musigny Les Combottes; vinified with one-third whole clusters): Bright dark red. Pungent, almost exotic aromas of raspberry and red cherry lifted by flowers. At once dense and juicy, showing darker flavors of blackberry and licorice. This wine has the concentration and body of a premier cru, notes Roumier,…
