2011 Vintage Ports (May 2014)

Bright, saturated dark ruby. Spectacularly multifaceted nose combines high-pitched medicinal cherry, briary black raspberry, pungent menthol, dried herbs, incense, Indian spices and a whiff of passion fruit. Boasts great creamy depth and vinosity to its black raspberry and licorice flavors, with huge sweetness buffered by spicy minerality. The note of passion fruit carries through on…

Vintage Port – The 2016 Declaration (Jun 2018)

The 1985 Dow’s Vintage Port has a gorgeous, very pure bouquet with mulberry, leather, terracotta tiles on a warm day, and hints of clove all beautifully defined. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannin, lightly spiced on the entry, touches of liquorice and black pepper, curry powder and ginger with a very harmonious…

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Deep ruby-red. Cassis, blueberry, smoke, shoe polish and tobacco leaf on the nose, plus a hint of confiture Sweeter and denser than the ’97; quite Pauillac in style. Finishes with dusty, even tannins. Youthful and strong for this wine.

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Very good red-ruby color. Wilder, somewhat rustic aromas of roasted plum and leather. Fat but vinous, with a strong leathery flavor. Rustic but rather full for this wine, and lush on the back end. No shortage of personality.

Mother & Child: La Lagune 1962 – 2015 (Apr 2018)

The 1986 La Lagune has a deep colour with less bricking than the 1982 by comparison. I find the nose here superior than the 1982 with plenty of fruit on the nose: wild strawberry, raspberry and red cherries mixed with tobacco and roasted chestnut. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, a little austere in…

Margaux Focus 1: Château Durfort-Vivens (Aug 2023)

The 2004 Durfort-Vivens is a respectable performance and outflanks both the 2006 and 2008. There are attractive scents on the well-defined nose: brambly red fruit, briar, slightly tertiary in style and yet more expressive and animated than other vintages. The palate is conservative in keeping with the vintage style, with slightly dry tannins and a…
