2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Deep, bright ruby-red. Sexy, ripe aromas of currant, black plum, raspberry, smoked meat, mocha, jasmine, black olive and earth. Smooth in texture but vinous and bright, with a penetrating character to the flavors of plum, currant, mocha and tobacco. Finishes bright and fresh, with dusty, tactile tannins and a classic St. Estephe medicinal note. This…

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2000 Talbot shows a bit of bricking on the rim. It’s somewhat rustic on the nose, displaying licorice-tinged black fruit, marmalade and furniture polish and just a little brettanomyces. A light underlying balsamic note filters through with time. The palate is medium-bodied, quite savory and powdery in texture, with dry-ish, grainy tannins and a…

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Bright ruby-red. Reticent aromas of black fruits, violet, bitter chocolate and licorice, plus a whiff of smoky oak. Dense, lush and sweet, but lively acids lift the flavors and contribute to the perfumed impression in the mouth. Finishes firmly tannic and fresh but sweet, with dusty tannins and lingering notes of leather and game. A…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Good deep red. Red raspberry, roast coffee and an overlay of toasty oak on the nose. Sweet and inviting, with supple, fresh red fruit flavors and a seamless texture. Finishes with good breadth and sneaky persistence, with fruit that coats the palate. This has turned out very well.

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2001 La Fleur-Pétrus is much more cohesive on the nose compared to the Hosanna, offering red berry fruit, antique furniture, truffle oil and clove. There is a touch of rusticity, but it is wonderfully cohesive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, a splash of soy on the entry, moderate weight and gentle grip…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

Full, bright red-ruby. Aromas of raspberry, plum, minerals and smoky oak show an almost roasted ripeness. Sweet, concentrated and quite suave, with subtle, deep cherry and mineral flavors carrying through to the persistent, aromatic finish. The tannins are quite fine, in the style of the vintage’s better examples.
