2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Saturated medium ruby. Blackberry, bitter chocolate and nutty oak on the nose; seems rather heavily extracted. Fat, chewy and sweet, with a slightly chunky medicinal black cherry flavor. Finishes with big, broad, granular tannins. A big boy for the vintage, but in an extractive style. (The sample I tasted in the spring of 2005 seemed…

Focus on Spain (Sep 2014)

(85% tempranillo, 10% cabernet sauvignon and 5% merlot; aged for 17 months in a combination of new and used French oak): Inky ruby. Vibrant, spice-accented aromas of blackberry and cherry-cola, with a suave floral overtone. Sweet and focused on the palate, offering an array of dark fruit flavors complicated by peppery spices and smoky minerality….

Fairest of Them All: Cos d’Estournel 1928 – 2015 (Oct 2018)

The 1990 Cos d’Estournel is a vintage that I have not tasted for several years. I have always had a soft spot for the 1990. It does not disappoint with gorgeous scents of clove, bay leaf, and warm gravel that are almost Pomerol-like in style. The palate is fresh and lively. This 1990 is very…

1982 Bordeaux, 20 Years On (Jul 2002)

Good full medium ruby. Perfumed aromas of cassis, redcurrant, plum, minerals, coconut and violet. Lush, dense and gentle; rich and chocolatey. With so much baby fat, this wine appears to miss out on ultimate clarity and grip. But finishes tight, with a touch of austerity and nicely restrained sweetness. Still quite young. Drink 2005 through…

2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story… (Feb 2018)

The 2015 Mauvesin Barton is floral, perfumed and lifted, all of which make it absolutely delicious to drink now. Blue fruit, lavender, mint and spice nuances are layered into the wine’s fabric. All the elements are very nicely balanced.

Finally: Bordeaux 2015 In Bottle (Jul 2019)

The 2015 Mauvesin Barton is beginning to fulfill the promise it showed from barrel. Black cherries and strawberry define that somewhat plush but focused nose. The palate is medium-bodied, supple and balanced with a smooth sheen on the long finish. This is well worth seeking out. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.
