2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Ruby-red. Red berries and mint on the reticent nose. Juicy, leanish and a bit closed in on itself, with slightly green flavors of dark berries and minerals. Quite dry but offers sneaky intensity and a lingering finish. This should benefit from a few years of patience. Very much like Lafite in miniature.

New Releases from the Tuscan Coast (Sep 2006)

Medium saturated ruby. Cool aromas of cassis, dark chocolate and mocha. Then sweet and bright in the mouth, with intense, peppery berry flavors complicated by leather and minerals. A distinctly stony, gripping style of wine that finishes a tad short and green. Currently less expressive and less generous than the best vintages, but keep in…

Barbaresco: Worlds Apart (Oct 2016)

Cigliuti’s 2013 Barbaresco Vie Erte has a level of depth and fruit intensity I don’t remember seeing in the past. To be sure, the Vie Erte has always been a more nervous edgy Barbaresco than the Serraboella, yet it also has striking mid-palate depth. Succulent red cherry, tobacco, cedar, mint and dried flowers add lovely…

Barbaresco: Worlds Apart (Oct 2016)

The 2012 Barbaresco Vie Erte is soft, succulent and quite enjoyable today. Sweet red cherry, cranberry, orange peel and white pepper give the Vie Erte its distinctive, high-toned personality, an impression that is reinforced by the vibrant, pulsating tannins. I imagine the 2012 will always retain its slightly nervous personality, but I would also prefer…

Barbaresco: Worlds Apart (Oct 2016)

Just bottled, the 2013 Barbaresco Serraboella is quite closed and reticent today. The 2013 boasts a serious center of fruit and tons of intensity, but it is also raw and not fully formed at this stage. Sweet red cherry, rose petal, mint, pomegranate and blood orange open up in the glass, but only with reluctance….

Tuscany New Releases, Part 1 (Mar 2020)

The 2016 Sassicaia is one of the most powerful, imposing young Sassicaias I can remember tasting. Explosive and vibrant with stunning depth, the 2016 possesses off-the-charts aromatic intensity, richness and structure, all in a mid-weight style that is so distinctive. Plum, lavender, rose petal, spice and mint all build into the explosive, deep finish in…
