2008 Bordeaux: A Day In A Life (Feb 2018)

The 2008 Ausone has a really showstopping bouquet, to wit, one of the most seductive you will find in 2008: pure red cherries, crushed strawberry and vanilla pod scents, later rose petal and an almost honeyed aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with sensual, ripe tannin that feel lavish, luxuriant. The richness is neatly countered by…

Cleaning Out the Cupboard: Bordeaux 1943-2020 (Jan 2023)

The 2008 Ausone has a dark hue with just slight aging on the rim. It has an introspective nose: black fruit, melted tar, cracked black pepper and a background of dried blood/meaty scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins; it’s a little austere for Ausone and is strict and drier than more benevolent vintages….

2007 Bordeaux : Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Overpriced (Jul 2010)

Good deep ruby-red. Spicy aromas of blueberry, licorice and bitter chocolate. Sweet, lush and deep but quite suave, with lovely lift to the cabernet franc-driven violet, licorice and peppery flavors. Firmly structured and long on the aftertaste. This already shows good mid-palate fat but really needs at least a few years to expand.

New Releases from Australia, Part 2 (Sep 2008)

Inky purple. Seductively perfumed nose offers cassis, blueberry, cherry-cola, violet and dried fig scents, with a suave undercurrent of smoky minerals. Deep, finely etched cherry and dark berry flavors are complicated by mocha and candied licorice, becoming riper with air. Cured meat and black cardamom notes arrive with air, adding further interest. Full, fleshy and…

Best New Releases from Australia (Jul 2001)

Pale green-edged color. Lime, nuts and marzipan on the nose, along with a complicating leesy aspect. Rich and pliant but quite dry, with flavors of pink grapefruit and spice. Fresh and focused. A very successful combination of weight and restraint. Lingering, subtle aftertaste.

Soldera Redux: 1981-2006 (Oct 2016)

Soldera’s 1991 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is forward, open-knit an mostly resolved, with plenty of stone fruit, leather, smoke, tobacco and earthy notes laced throughout. Although quite pretty and enjoyable, the 1991 Riserva is a wine that has arrived. It won’t get any better or more expressive than it is today.
