Southwold: 2016 Bordeaux Blind (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Réserve de la Comtesse has a delightful bouquet of black fruit infused with sous-bois and pencil shavings – classic Claret through and through. The medium-bodied palate delivers crunchy black fruit laced with tobacco and cedar. This is a correct, quite “linear” wine, but one that I find well balanced, with a welcome pepperiness…

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

Ripeness is pushed to the edge in the 2016 Puygueraud. Black cherry, plum, chocolate , spice and licorice are all pushed forward in this fleshy, succulent Côtes de Bordeaux. Dense and powerful, the 2016 packs a serious punch. I would give the 2016 another year or two in bottle to see if the tannins soften…

The DBs: Bordeaux 2016 In Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Puygueraud has a slightly pinched bouquet that needs some aeration to loosen up. It doesn’t quite flow like some of the other Francs-Côtes de Bordeaux that I have tasted. The palate is medium-bodied with quite rustic, grainy tannin, and a slight metallic tincture detracts from the saline/briny finish.

It comes across a little diffuse and not the purest on the nose, touches of brettanomyces developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin, fine acidity, but it comes across as quite simple and lacks…

Bordeaux’s Radiant 2015s (Apr 2016)

The 2015 Moulin Saint-Georges is powerful and ripe, with plenty of forward fruit. One of the more exuberant wines in the Vauthier lineup, the Moulin Saint-Georges offers striking depth and tons of richness, especially at its level. Plum, black cherry, scorched earth, tobacco and leather develop in the glass. The Moulin is a bit rustic…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

One of the more powerful wines for the year, the 2014 Ducru-Beaucaillou surprises with its sheer concentration. A blast of dark cherry, crème de cassis, mocha, spice and chocolate makes a strong opening statement. Super-ripe, voluptuous and opulent, the wine possesses off-the-charts depth and richness. Ducru remains the most opulent and flamboyant of the 2014…
