Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

(90% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot, 1.5% cabernet franc and 1.5% petit verdot; 71IPT; from a yield of 39 hectoliters per hectare; 13.5% alcohol; a roughly 38% selection) Good, full, dark ruby-red. Aromatic nose offers red fruits, sweet spices, dried bay leaf, soy sauce and an intense saline note. Large-scaled and powerful, with a distinctly salty,…

South Africa’s Ongoing Wine Revolution (Jun 2015)

(14.7% alcohol; aged for 16 months in 80% new French oak): Dark, saturated ruby. Aromas of blueberry, violet, licorice and cedar. Lovely penetration to the clean, dark flavors of cassis and bitter chocolate. Shows none of the burnt rubber or woodsmoke elements that still plague some examples of Pinotage. Finishes firmly tannic and backward but…

2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Good deep ruby. Currant, minerals and nutty oak on the nose. Lush, sweet and pliant on the attack, then more closed in the middle palate, with a chewy, rather serious texture and impressive density for the year. The black fruit flavors are complicated by minerals, dark chocolate and mocha. Finishes with a rather powerful tannic…

(65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot; the estate-wide yield here was 44 hl/ha) the very early harvest date of September 29 for the merlot (October 15 for the cabernet sauvignon) suggests that the estate might have pulled the trigger a little too quickly here, especially in what is one…

2008 Bordeaux: A Day In A Life (Feb 2018)

The 2008 Montrose has a lifted perfumed bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, iris and limestone scents, nicely defined and opening with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm backbone, layers of cedar-tinged black fruit, spicebox and white pepper, leading to a persistent, structured finish that probably needs another year or two to soft. Impressive. (Tasted…

The 2008 Clarets (Jul 2011)

Bright ruby-red. Fresh black fruits and licorice on the nose. Juicy and penetrating, with excellent focus and purity to the flavors of blueberry, blackberry and minerals. Tightly wound and very firm on the aftertaste, with suave tannins and excellent length. An excellent Montrose with a modern touch.
