The Comedown: Bordeaux 2011 Ten-Years-On (Apr 2022)

The 2011 Petrus has plenty of fruit on the nose, elegant and floral, redcurrant and raspberry fruit, a touch of crushed stone and pressed rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with a rich and quite extravagant style of the finish, lightly spiced with a rounded, velvety-smooth and quite dense finish. Maybe it just conveys a…

Vintage Port – The 2016 Declaration (Jun 2018)

The 1985 Dow’s Vintage Port has a gorgeous, very pure bouquet with mulberry, leather, terracotta tiles on a warm day, and hints of clove all beautifully defined. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannin, lightly spiced on the entry, touches of liquorice and black pepper, curry powder and ginger with a very harmonious…

A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 Les Ormes de Pez feels a little smudged and lacked the precision of its peers on the nose: leather and sage, plenty of cedar and sandalwood with aeration. The 2009 Les Ormes de Pez has a strange nose at first, a little distant and missing the same fruit intensity as its peers. There is a slight dustiness here that translates over the palate. Good fruit concentration and grip, just a touch of greenness around the edges with a welcome dash of spice towards…

The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

Bright ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice and mint are lifted by a floral note. Supple, dry and vinous, showing a classic Saint-Estephe coolness and finesse. Not at all sweet but offers good penetration to its suave dark fruit flavors. The building tannins coat the front teeth. Nicely done.

Champagne: 2021 New Releases (Nov 2021)

The 2013 Cristal is a wine of extraordinary precision and tension. Searing acids drive a bold, racy Champagne that won’t be ready to offer its best drinking anytime soon. In recent vintages, Cristal has been quite open on release. That is far from the case with the 2013. Readers should plan on being quite patient….
