Napa Valley’s Extraordinary 2016 Cabernets (Dec 2018)

The 2014 Opus One is not as showy or obvious as some of the other surrounding vintages, but it will have its day. Stylistically, the 2014 is bright and also a touch linear, with a construction built more on focus rather than opulence. Readers should plan on giving the 2014 another few years in bottle…

The Most and Least Important of Things: Petrus 1897–2011 (Jul 2020)

The 1986 Petrus out-performs the 1985 not for the first time. Although you could argue that it plays safe, the bouquet has more energy and delineation than the previous vintage with Cuban cigar, undergrowth and potpourri aromas. Attractive, though you do end up yearning for more fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with mulberry and sage….

Santa Barbara: Better Than Ever (Sep 2017)

A wine of precision and nuance, the 2014 Grenache Shakti has turned out beautifully since I last tasted it. Dark red and plum fruit, herbs, spices and rose petal jump from the glass. The flavors are beautifully delineated in this super-expressive, harmonious Grenache from Sine Qua Non. Stylistically, the 2014 is medium in body, understated…

1995 and 1994 Bordeaux (May 1996)

Very good deep color. Nose of spicy berries and licorice features an exotic note of citric skin. Attractive floral, ripe fruit offers spicy berry flavor. Finishes with good grip and length, and tannins under control. An impressive showing.

2017 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti: A Day’s Work (Jul 2020)

The 2017 Corton Grand Cru is floral, gracious and so inviting. White pepper, mint and pine perk up the red cherry and cranberry fruit flavors nicely. In 2017, the Corton is decidedly ethereal and pointed, with terrific energy and tons of class. It will be interesting to see how it develops, as there is a…

Complex, Not Complicated: 2017 DRC in Bottle (Feb 2020)

The 2017 Corton Grand Cru was cropped at 33hl/ha, picked on September 4 and bottled on January 23, 2019. The heavenly bouquet, probably one of the finest I have encountered from this property since its inception in 2009, features brambly red fruit, discreet touches of hawthorn and succinct use of oak. Curiously, there is something…
