2009 Red Burgundies (Mar 2012)

Good deep red with ruby highlights. Blackberry, boysenberry, violet and peppery herbs on the reticent nose. The palate offers an extraordinary combination of volume and energy, showing classically dry fruit, fresh herb and pepper flavors and less obvious power today than La Tache. But this is also an outsized wine, with a saline, mouth-saturating finish…

Tuscany: New Releases from the Coast (Jul 2022)

The 2018 Grattamacco is the most elegant, refined and satisfying wine I have ever tasted from Grattamacco. There is a level of finesse here that is simply unreal. Bright and translucent, with tons of detail, the 2018 oozes with pedigree. Lavender, spice, mint, tobacco and dried flowers add an attractive upper register.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

(a 53/47 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Bright red-ruby. Slightly medicinal aromas of cassis, chocolate, licorice, violet and mint. Suave in the mouth, with ripe, moderately intense flavors of blueberry, blackberry and violet. Seems a bit soft and lacking in ultimate grip, but nicely ripe and floral. Finishes with slightly disjointed but ultimately sweet…

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2001 Nenin is one that I have not tasted for several years. Lavender and potpourri scents feature on the nose, which is quite backward at first but opens in the glass, though it lacks the complexity of more recent vintages under Jean-Hubert Delon. The plummy palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and muscular…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

Dark red. Medicinal cherry, currant leaf, mint and nutty oak on the nose. Broad but quite dry and in a shell today after the bottling. But seems distinctly less sweet than the 2002, which also has more lift on the back end. To my taste, Nenin has become more Pomerol in style with vintage 2002….

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Good full red. Fruit-driven aromas are complicated by floral and licorice nuances. Fairly sweet and ripe in the middle palate, with tobacco, spice and licorice flavors of noteworthy purity. Very Pauillac in its dry, penetrating flavor, but I found this sweeter than the Duhart-Milon tasted alongside it.
