1997 and 1996 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 1999)

Medium red. Cherry, roasted herbs, earth, licorice and an almost exotically sweet note of marzipan on the nose. Supple in the mouth, with notes of pepper and woodsmoke. Seems fresher than the ’97 Vieux Télégraphe, but this is not at all dominated by its acids. Finishes with very good length, and tongue-coating but supple tannins.

1997 Vintage Ports (May 2000)

Full saturated ruby. Inky, brooding aromas of syrupy black fruits and violet. Dense, thick and tactile, with superb depth of flavor and compelling juicy sweetness. Finishes with powerful tannins and superb grip. Not as flamboyantly aromatic as this wine normally is in its youth, but structured for long, slow development in bottle.

1995 and 1994 Bordeaux (May 1996)

Medium color. Somewhat high-toned black cherry nose is currently dominated by lead pencil and cedar. Gentle and flavorful; has alluring perfume and sweetness in the mouth but less fat than the ’95. Ripe, persistent on the finish. A very pretty Palmer.

Looking Back To Go Forward: Lafite-Rothschild 1868 – 2015 (Jul 2018)

The 1994 Lafite-Rothschild is a vintage that I have not tasted for some time. Poured blind, it has a healthy colour with modest signs of aging on the brick rim. Since this is 99.5% Cabernet Sauvignon (I always thought it was 100%!) it is dominated by classic aromas associated with that variety: undergrowth and tobacco,…

1995 and 1994 Bordeaux (May 1996)

Spicy coconut and shoe polish nose. Vinous and delineated in the mouth; has plenty of flavor. A tart edge keeps the sweetness of fruit under wraps. The somewhat cool finish is long, subtle and firmly tannic.

1995 and 1994 Bordeaux (May 1996)

Excellent deep, saturated color. Sexy aromas of black cherry, cassis, and toasty, smoky oak. Wonderful sweetness and texture, with terrific perfume. More pliable than the ’95 Las Cases. Tannins are extremely well integrated for a cabernet-based ’94. I don’t find the austerity that Delon cites.
