Lagrange 1959-2015 (Dec 2020)

The 1995 Lagrange was picked from 21 September until 5 October. This has quite a compact bouquet that needs aeration, eventually revealing attractive brambly red fruit mixed with sage and thyme, brown spices and sandalwood. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity and a rounded texture. The fruit seems to be finally drying…

Three Vertical Tastings (Sep 2004)

(44% cabernet sauvignon, 43% merlot and 13% petit verdot) Medium ruby-red. Flamboyant aromas of smoky black cherry, beefsteak tomato, roasted herbs, espresso, underbrush and truffle. Smooth and fat, with sweet dark berry flavors and lush texture, if not the normal clarity of Lagrange. Finishes with tongue-coating tannins that arrive late. Just now reaching its peak….

His Father’s Son: Grand Mayne 1955-2011 (May 2021)

The 1995 Grand Mayne has a much better bouquet compared to the bottles of the Eighties with vibrant scents of red cherries, dark chocolate and light minty aromas. This could be classed as the first of the modern-day vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, grainy in texture with cedar-infused red fruit laced with…

1995 and 1994 Bordeaux (May 1996)

Black-ruby color. Port-like nose shows a primary grapey character along with herb and spice notes. Thick, sweet and velvety in the mouth; very concentrated but a bit one-dimensional. Finishes with ripe but somewhat coarse tannins. A big, somewhat rustic mouthful, not quite as interesting as the ’94 was at the same stage of its development….

Long Distance Runner: Brane-Cantenac 1924-2015 (Jan 2019)

The 1995 Brane-Cantenac was picked September 18–29 at 46hl/ha. It has long been the high point of what, in retrospect, was a challenging decade for this Margaux estate. The gorgeous, slightly herbal bouquet is very engaging, featuring plenty of red berry fruit mixed with bay leaf and mint. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin,…

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Ruby-red. Floral, cedary aromas of blackcurrant and licorice. Concentrated but quite pliant in the middle palate. Ripe tannins nicely supported by fruit extract.
