New Releases from Champagne (Dec 2010)

The 2000 Brut La Grande Année is a ripe, open wine bursting with generous, expansive fruit. Smoke, minerals, pastry crust and flowers add complexity to the radiant fruit. The Grande Année reveals gorgeous depth and a multi-dimensional, kaleidoscopic personality that screams of pure breed. The 2000 will be a fascinating vintage to follow. I am…

New Vintage Champagne Releases (Nov 2010)

(63% pinot noir and 37% chardonnay) Bright yellow-gold. High-pitched aromas of lemongrass, orange peel, pear and white pepper, with a slow-building smokiness. Energetic, sharply focused citrus flavors gain depth with air, picking up deeper orchard and pit fruit character while retaining vivacity. Leaves a trail of piquant minerals and citrus zest behind on the long,…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

(50% cabernet sauvignon, 48% merlot and 2% cabernet franc) Medium ruby-red. Discreet, classically cool St. Estephe aromas of blackberry, blueberry, violet and mint, with a light leafiness. Then fairly supple and lush for this wine, with moderate density and restrained sweetness. The berry flavors are firmed by harmonious acidity. The tannins offer good grip but…

The first couple of times, it did not reach my lofty expectations, yet the last two bottles have delivered fireworks. Limpid amber in color, the bouquet errs towards Barsac in style, scents of orange…

Champagne: 2020 New Releases (Nov 2020)

The 2012 La Grande Dame is terrific. In fact, it is one of the finest recent Grande Dames I can remember tasting. Vibrant and tense, the 2012 exudes energy. At this stage, the natural richness of the 2012 vintage is hidden behind the wine's bright, salivating acids. Green apple, pear, mint and white pepper add…

2007 Bordeaux : Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Overpriced (Jul 2010)

Deep ruby-red. Superripe plum, mocha, tobacco, graphite and licorice on the nose, plus a musky suggestion of leather. Sweet and plump, even a bit chunky, with a chewy mid-palate and very ripe flavors of chocolate and earth. Finishes with slightly unrefined tannins.
