Brilliance in Napa Valley: 2016 & 2015 Cabernets (Jan 2018)

The 2015 Screaming Eagle is fabulous. Rich and ample on the palate, with soaring aromatics from the Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2015 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Ripe red plum, pomegranate, mint, kirsch, lavender and sweet spice notes are beautifully delineated in the glass. In this tasting, the Cabernet-based Screaming Eagle is quite a bit more…

Cleaning Out the Cupboard: Bordeaux 1943-2020 (Jan 2023)

The 1978 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has a ferrous bouquet, fully mature of course, with fresh mint, potpourri and lavender notes. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity and slightly dry tannins. It is pretty meaty with dried blood and black pepper, attenuating just a little on the finish. The 1978 is an old-school Claret…

Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

Ruby-red. Enticing f loral aromas of redcurrant, strawberry and flowers. Very bright and medium-full on entry, but with lively, peppery acidity giving definition and lift to the red fruit and underbrush flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins, but could use a little more length for a higher score. Winemaker and university professor Denis Dubourdieu consults here.

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Good red-ruby. Vibrant, cool aromas of blueberry, cassis, licorice, herbs and flowers. A juicy, spicy midweight with moderate stuffing and depth, but good lift from lively, peppery acidity. Misses out on the richness of the vintage but well delineated and nicely made.

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Trotte Vieille is very ripe and almost Mediterranean in style on the nose: black olives and liquorice infusing the rich red fruit, just a hint of hung game in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and generous, almost Châteauneuf in style with a pinch of spicebox and sage towards…

Cellar Journal – Bordeaux to Start… (Jul 2018)

The 2004 Gruaud Larose is a vintage that I have not tasted since 2011. This example, from a half-bottle, shows a little under-ripeness compared to vintages of similar age, but the aromatics are redeemed by their freshness. Black fruit intermingle with tobacco and tar, just a hint of hickory and clove loitering in the background….
