Bordeaux 2012: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (May 2013)

Deep purple-ruby. Highly aromatic nose offers scents of smoky blackberry, red cherry, violet, cocoa and spicy oak. Juicy, spicy and rather deep for the vintage, with nicely concentrated sour cherry and bright blackcurrant lifted by a floral element. A peppery twist complicates the rising, almost creamy finish, which shows a restrained sweetness and sneaky concentration….

A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The 2012 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has an impressive cassis-tinged bouquet with fresh tobacco and graphite infused black fruit that are very well focused and neatly integrated with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a keen thread of acidity, finely proportioned with a vibrant graphite-infused finish. One of the standout Left Bank wines of the…

2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story… (Feb 2018)

The 2015 Clarendelle Bordeaux is plump, juicy and nicely suited to drinking now and over the next few years. Sweet cherry, tobacco, menthol, licorice and dried herb notes are pushed forward in this pretty, mid-weight wine from Haut-Brion’s Clarence Dillon negociant wines.

The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Full ruby-red. Superripe, highly complex aromas of plum, cocoa powder, tobacco and warm stones. Big, plush and chewy, with compelling sweetness and generosity of texture to the flavors of plum, minerals, tobacco and woodsmoke. Has the sheer stuffing to support the serious, building but noble tannins. Finishes with superb palate-staining persistence. This may well shut…

Taittinger: Comtes de Champagne 1971— 1998 (Aug 2010)

The 1998 Comtes de Champagne is a different story altogether. This is a sexy, up-front Comtes endowed with lovely richness in its fruit and open, expressive aromatics. It remains an impressive, inviting Comtes that should also continue to develop nicely in the bottle for at least another decade plus.

New Vintage Champagnes (Nov 2007)

(L6202UB02500 etched on bottle) Light yellow. Stony peach and pear aromas are complicated by smoked meat and Asian spices. Round and filled in, with admirably deep pit fruit flavors, a pliant texture and a fresh mineral kick on the finish. Leaves a strong pear impression on the palate and an echo of minerals.
