New Releases from the Tuscan Coast (Sep 2006)

Medium-deep red. Very intense flavors of dark plum, asphalt and gunflint, with a touch of herbal smokiness. The wine’s fine-grained texture and harmonious acids bring its fruit and mineral flavors into focus, but this is a delicate, restrained version of Ornellaia. Finishes smooth and adequately long. Offers excellent potential in the context of the vintage.

A Look Back at the 2004 & 2005 Barbarescos (Jun 2016)

The 2005 Darmagi, Angelo Gaja’s Cabernet Sauvignon has aged quite nicely, although it can’t really hold a candle to the Barbarescos. Except for the finish, which is a bit abrupt, the 2005 offers good varietal character in the style of a cooler, fresh vintage. Angelo Gaja first planted this site with Cabernet Sauvignon to show…

Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2009)

Bright ruby-red. Sexy nose offers aromas of cassis, currant, flowers and smoky oak. Broad, lush and essentially gentle, with hints of exotic brown spices and a slight peppery nuance. Very classy, laid-back cabernet that finishes with fine, toothcoating tannins and impressive persistence. From vines planted in 1978.

2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Moderately saturated ruby-red. Currant, chocolate, lead pencil and spicy oak on the nose. Nicely spicy in the middle, but less rich than it appeared a year ago from barrel. A spicy, minerally midweight whose firm tannins appear to be less sweet than those of the 2001.

Bordeaux ’08: Far Better Than Expected (May 2009)

(51% merlot, 41% cabernet sauvignon and 8% petit verdot) Full, bright ruby-red. Perfumed, sexy aromas of red cherry, plum and flowers. Suave on entry, then sweet but gripping in the middle, with integrated acids giving terrific definition and thrust to the complex, creamy flavors of red berries, minerals and sweet spices. A truly seamless and…

2008 Bordeaux: A Day In A Life (Feb 2018)

The 2008 Palmer has a very intense bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, crushed violet and iris scents, blossoming in the glass whilst retaining superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but quite rounded tannin that frame the pure blackberry and raspberry fruit. There are touches of white pepper and clove towards the finish, completing quite…
