2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Moderately saturated medium red. Roasted plum and raspberry, smoky oak, hot stones and tobacco on the nose. Sweet and vinous, with plenty of personality and structure. Firmly tannic finish features good cut and length. This is excellent for the vintage.

2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Ruby-red. Knockout nose combines black raspberry, plum syrup, hot stones, Cuban tobacco and sexy oak tones. Large-scaled, lush and seamless; pure silk in the mouth. More layered and longer than La Mission ’99. Finishes with broad, lush tannins and excellent persistence.

New Releases from Piedmont: The Stars Are Aligned (Oct 2011)

The Tommaso Canale 2007 Barolo Vigna Rionda reveals lovely inner perfume and a sensual personality. Rose petals, licorice, tar, sweet cherries and spices are some of the nuances that emerge from the glass. The tannins are firm yet well integrated. This is a decidedly mid-weight, gracious style for the year. It will be interesting to…

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée La Colombière is expressive and very floral on the nose, certainly more complex than the Vosne-Village at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and quite firm and robust; it showed more pliancy in barrel. Maybe it is missing the elegance of the 2019, but there is admirable persistence. Give…

2016 Barolo: Right Place, Right Time (Feb 2020)

Maria Teresa Mascarello made one of the wines of the vintage in 2016. Her 2016 Barolo is soft and sensual, but also quite hushed – as many wines are in this vintage in the early going. Medium in body with silky tannins and exceptional balance, the 2016 has so much to offer, but it is…

Life on the Margin: Chablis 2019/2020 (Oct 2021)

The 2019 Chablis Les Butteaux 1er Cru has a supremely focused, mineral-driven bouquet; traces of white flowers, white truffle and fennel come through with time. The palate is poised and delineated, revealing veins of white chocolate and slithers of white peach. A little spiciness surfaces with aeration. This is a gorgeous Butteaux, always one of…
