Vertical Tasting of Chateau Giscours (Jan 2012)

(55% cabernet sauvignon and 45% merlot; 31 g/l dry extract; 13.4% alcohol): Good full ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of cassis, violet, shoe polish, tar and smoke. Sweet, ripe and luscious, with earthy underbrush and blackberry flavors lingering impressively on the aftertaste. A very fleshy, ripe Giscours that remains precise and light on its feet thanks to…

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Saturated medium ruby. Perfumed aromas of blackberry, violet and cocoa. Sweet and minerally, with lovely, expressive berry flavors framed by harmonious, ripe acidity. Structured and serious, but not at all hard. Finishes with broad, fine tannins. Offers excellent potential.

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2000 Giscours is a vintage that I last tasted at the 20th-anniversary vertical in 2015. It has a lovely nose, not powerful, but pure and less rustic than some of the others tasted, offering red plum and cedar (as I have noted on previous bottles) and hints of fig jam and black olive. The…

2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Medium red. Aromas of black cherry, minerals and graphite. Sweet and harmonious, with impressive vivacity and purity of flavor for ’99. Strong mineral and graphite notes contribute complexity. Not overly fleshy but fresh and sharply delineated, with excellent intensity. A very sophisticated wine, showing well today.

Where the Heart Is: Ducru-Beaucaillou 1934-2018 (Jul 2022)

The 1999 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a vintage that I have found perplexing in the past, and the last time I was unable to give a score. Returning again, I find the nose a little diluted with light black fruit, a touch of brine and sea salt, but oddly it reminds me of the 2013. The palate…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Nines (Sep 2019)

The 1999 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a vintage that I have not tasted since 2009, when I was smitten by its Burgundian texture and fleshy finish. Ten years on, this bottle is disappointing. The sweet, almost prune-like nose caught me completely by surprise. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and low acidity. This is a “big-boned”…
