The 2019 Champagne Summer Preview (Jul 2019)

A totally breathtaking wine, the 1995 Dom Pérignon Rosé P2 is a fitting conclusion to this tasting. Crushed flowers, sweet tobacco, cedar and dried cherry give the 1995 fabulous aromatic complexity and nuance. Deceptive in its ethereal feel, the 1995 has lovely palate presence and tons of class. It is both mature and timeless, in…

Dom Pérignon in Three Acts (Nov 2017)

Like the 1969 P3 in this tasting, the 1971 Dom Pérignon P3 is dense, powerful and quite vinous in style. A huge, explosive Champagne with fruit that nearly covers the mousse, the 1971 has enough depth to drink well for another decade, maybe more. I have a slight preference for the Œnothèque (P2) in this…

Dom Pérignon in Three Acts (Nov 2017)

Dom Pérignon’s 1973 P3 offers good up-front appeal, but some of that initial richness tapers off on the mid-palate and into the finish, which makes the wine feel a bit disjointed. Vinous Table: Rusty Staub Charity Dinner, New York (Dec 2015)

Sadly, it is not a great night for Bordeaux. The 1982 Léoville Las Cases is powerful but also incredibly compact, with little appeal or mid-palate depth. This is a very stubborn wine, even within the context of Las Cases.

A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The bottle of 1982 Léoville Las-Cases was sadly out of condition, though fortunately I tasted another example at a private dinner in Bordeaux a few weeks later. To be honest, I have always preferred the 1985 or 1986 to this vintage, and this gives me no reason to change my mind. It has a surliness…

1982 Bordeaux, 20 Years On (Jul 2002)

Full medium ruby. Aromas of currant, black cherry, licorice, minerals and flowers. Thick, sweet and deep; still young but in a gentler, lower-acid style than either the ’86 or ’96. Still, this boasts sneaky intensity and wonderful persistence. Tannins are substantial but thoroughly ripe. Drink 2004 through 2025.
