Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Quintus, matured in 40% new oak, presents a fragrant, quite floral nose of black cherries, violet, incense and light orange pith scents; the oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fresh entry and blood-orange-infused black fruit. The Cabernet Franc imparts real spiciness toward a finish that lingers in…

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Quintus has developed into an elegant, sensual Saint-Émilion. Succulent dark cherry, plum, spice, menthol and leather build nicely, lending brooding intensity to this deceptively medium-bodied 2019. The blend of 55.4% Merlot, 44.6% Cabernet Franc is very nicely judged. I can't wait to see how this ages.

Focus on Santa Barbara County (Dec 2014)

(35% new French oak): Bright purple. Expansive, exotic bouquet of black raspberry, potpourri, bacon fat, smoky minerals and incense; smells like a high-class Cote-Rotie.  Fat and velvety on entry, then more taut in the mid-palate, showing superb energy and focus to its deep, sweet flavors of red and dark berries and violet pastille.  Completely stains…

Santa Barbara: The Thrill of Discovery (Jul 2014)

Rose petals, mint, savory herbs and dark-toned fruit meld together in the 2011 La Sangre de Jonata, a wine that has really come together over the last year. Exquisite and impeccably balanced in the glass, the 2011 is bright, articulate and wonderfully expressive. In this vintage, winemaker Matt Dees air-dried a portion of the fruit…

Bordeaux 2011: Tales of Tannins and Terroir (May 2012)

Medium-deep ruby. Captivating nose combines red fruits, mocha and aromatic herbs. Light and lively on the palate, with good precision to the red fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes with lovely length and persistent mineral tang. This refined, nicely balanced midweight will be an extremely impressive debut for this new property, which is owned by Anthony…

2012 Red Burgundies (Jan 2014)

Good bright red. Very ripe aromas of raspberry and smoky minerals. Fat, plush and sweet, offering noteworthy density to its strawberry and raspberry fruit. Finishes rich and long, with sweet tannins and no rough edges. Lovely potential.
