Bordeaux’s Radiant 2015s (Apr 2016)

The 2015 Rocheyron is a huge, massively endowed St.-Émilion marked by considerable richness but even bigger tannins that clamp down on the fruit and convey an impression of austerity. This is a work in progress. For now, there is little pleasure here.

Back to Burgfest: 2017 Reds – Blind (Jan 2022)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru has a pastille-like bouquet of pure red cherries, strawberry and orange blossom, a little simple compared to its peers. The palate is somewhat sweet-and-sour on the entry, showing quite a bit of extraction. Spicy but not quite as clean as I would like on the finish. Difficult to…

Focus on California’s North Coast (May 2009)

Saturated deep ruby. Crushed black fruits and minerals on the lively nose. The densest and richest of these 2006s, with a compelling sweetness to its extremely primary dark fruit and bitter chocolate flavors. Not yet complex but has terrific stuffing to support its big, chewy, broad tannins. Lay this one down.

Focus on California’s North Coast (May 2008)

Good medium ruby. High-pitched aromas and flavors of black cherry, licorice and chocolate mint. Generous and tactile, with noteworthy energy and minerality and a restrained sweetness in the middle palate. This is uncommonly suave for a wine from mountain fruit. Finishes broad and long, with substantial fine, well-integrated tannins and excellent life and lift.

2015 Barolo – The Late Releases (Nov 2019)

The 2015 Barolo Serra is plush and forward, with terrific density and quite a bit of immediacy. A rush of sweet red cherry, blood orange, spice, menthol, star anise and cinnamon gives the 2015 its racy, exotic feel. Soft tannins (for a young Barolo) and lush, forward fruit add to its considerable appeal.

New Releases from Piedmont (Dec 2010)

Rosso’s 2006 Barolo La Serra shows more density and freshness than the Serralunga, along with high-toned flowers, spices, mint and berries that flow from its focused, mid-weight frame. Firm, chewy tannins round out this strong effort from proprietor Davide Rosso.
