Focus on Sauternes (Jul 1998)

Exotic aromas of truffle, game, dried fruits and tobacco; strong impression of botrytis. Powerful on entry, then very sweet (74 grams/liter r.s.) and very concentrated, with an amazingly glyceral texture. Powerful and very deep. Still some sulfur to be absorbed. One of the richest wines of this group, really thick with extract. Finishes firm, youthful…

Focus on Sauternes (Jul 1998)

Oily, clove-scented oak and flowers dominate the nose. Juicy and bright, but with a seductive billowy texture. Compelling inner-mouth flavors of ginger, coconut and caraway seed (serve with a Thai curry?). Solid acidity frames and extends the fruit through a long, oak-spicy finish. A very good showing.

Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 Pape-Clement Blanc has a seductive, creamy bouquet with crème brûlée, peach skin scents developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a thick veneer of new oak, creamy and commercial, not a dry white with scintillating terroir expression but you still find yourself taking sip after sip of this heady wine….

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Pape Clément Blanc is unctuous and beautifully textured, with soft contours and fabulous overall balance. Orchard fruit, apricot and gentle spice notes all come together in an open-knit Pessac-Léognan white that will drink well upon release. Lightly tropical notes and a kiss of French oak add closing nuance. As always, the Pape Clément…

Pierre, Denis & Jean-Jacques: Doisy-Daëne & L’Extravagance 1942-2013 (Jan 2022)

The 2011 L’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne has a beautifully defined bouquet with honey, egg whites, white peach and light petrolly aromas. Wonderful focus here. The palate is very well balanced with orange rind, peach and honey, citrus fruit and saffron, fanning out with ease and composure on the decadent finish counterbalanced by the killer acidity. This…

Focus on Sauternes (Jul 1998)

Straw-gold color. Deep aromas of acacia honey, brown butter, oak spice and mint. Quite sweet but only moderately thick; shows a resiny oaky quality in the mouth. Seems a bit monolithic today and lacking in nuance; I don’t get the typical lift and class of the cru. Honeyed, slightly alcoholic finish, with the viscosity building…
