2005 Barolo: A Dark Horse Emerges (Jul 2016)

Marco Marengo’s 2005 Barolo Brunate has aged reasonably well. But is that enough for one of Barolo’s Grand Crus? I don’t think it is. Beams of firm, incisive tannin have helped preserve the wine, but the 2005 has not really blossomed into what a ten year-old Barolo from this site should be. There is good…

Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2009)

Deep red. Pure, perfumed nose shows lovely brown-spice lift but is very reticent today. Aromatic and vibrant but youthfully unevolved; most impressive today for its energy, definition and lift. Shows very suave tannins for the year. A very classy 2005 in the making.

The Glorious 1999 Red Burgundies (Mar 2018)

Healthy dark red. Captivating nose offers scents of raspberry, mocha, graphite, tobacco and sandalwood; evolving slowly and gracefully. Then dense and wonderfully fresh in the mouth, with spice and soil tones perfectly counterpointing fresh remaining red fruits. No impression of heaviness here; in fact, this is quite lively and should still soften further with additional…

2007 and 2006 Red Burgundies (Mar 2009)

Good deep red (these ’06s are darker than the ’07s in virtually every case). High-pitched, pure aromas of cherry and flowers. Dense, seamless and sweet in the mouth, with a fine-grained texture and captivating inner-mouth perfume. Offers terrific clarity of fruit and really stains the palate on the long aftertaste. A strong vintage for Vosne-Romanee,…

The 2009 Red Burgundies (May 2011)

The 2008 Nuits St. Georges Clos des Forets St.-Georges is a gorgeous wine. Here the freshness of the vintage plays off the warmth of the site nicely. The 2008 is naturally less extroverted than the 2009 tasted alongside it, but the wine nevertheless impresses for its cool, mineral-laced fruit and fabulous length. This is a…

2008 Red Burgundies (Mar 2011)

Good dark red. Musky, tangy red berries and a whiff of truffle on the nose; a bit less elegant than the Clos de l’Arlot. Then juicy and vibrant but tight and hiding its underlying richness; strong and palate-staining but much less fruity today, even a bit youthfully tough. The tannins are distinctly more peppery than…
