The 2014 White Burgundies: What’s Not To Like? (Sep 2016)

(in barrel, with very little SO2 added to this point): White peach, minerals and a medicinal whiff of menthol on the nose. A far more austere wine than the 2015 version, dominated in the mouth by crushed-rock minerality and menthol. Showing little in the way of flattering fruit in the early going. This is remarkably…

2010 and 2009 Southern Rhone Wines (Jan 2012)

Full ruby. Huge, room-filling bouquet of blackberry compote, cherry, potpourri and cured tobacco, along with an intense spicy quality and a hint of orange zest. Palate-staining dark fruit flavors are braced by a strong mineral component and complicated by star anise and candied lavender nuances. Refuses to let up on the finish, which emphatically echoes…

2001 and 2000 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2003)

Liqueur-like red fruits; even riper but less peppery than the young 2001. Wonderfully fat and sweet in the mouth, but with firm mineral spine giving the wine unusual verve for the year. Still youthfully tight on the end, with compelling minerality and persistence.

2005 and 2004 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2007)

Dark red. Explosively aromatic nose features intense floral-accented red berry and cherry notes and a potent mocha quality. Velvety in texture and strikingly deep, with sweet kirsch and blackberry flavors lifted by a refreshing mineral tone on the back. The endless finish, featuring suave tannins, is lush and seamless.

Best New Releases from Australia (Jul 1999)

Bright, saturated ruby-purple color. Brooding aromas of cassis, cherry pit, baking spices, smoked duck, soy sauce, minerals and eucalyptus. Great freshness and snap in the mouth; dense, concentrated, superripe cassis and black raspberry flavors are complicated by mineral and minty components. Powerful and primary, but already displays compelling inner-mouth perfume. Very long, slow-building finish features…

Looking Back To Go Forward: Lafite-Rothschild 1868 – 2015 (Jul 2018)

The 2007 Lafite-Rothschild is a strong performer in what was a challenging growing season. At 11 years of age the 2007 is beginning to drink well with blackberry, briary, graphite and smoke on the nose, perhaps still that old touch of antique bureau. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and tobacco, well balanced yet…
