The Future’s Definitely Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Mar 2021)

The 2018 de Lamarque has a cohesive, well-defined bouquet of vibrant blackberry and raspberry fruit, crushed rock and light sous-bois notes, sophisticated and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a slightly chalky texture and a fresh, very sapid finish. Quintessentially Haut-Médoc. I can see this aging nicely over the next 15–20 years.

Bordeaux 2018: Not Back in Black (Mar 2021)

The 2018 De Lamarque is a total knockout. Inky, deep and wonderfully expressive, the 2018 hits all the right notes. Black cherry, plum, leather, scorched earth and leather imbue the 2018 with so much character. I especially like the way the 2018 grows in the glass as it builds to a huge crescendo. All the…

Lagrange 1959-2015 (Dec 2020)

The 1995 Lagrange was picked from 21 September until 5 October. This has quite a compact bouquet that needs aeration, eventually revealing attractive brambly red fruit mixed with sage and thyme, brown spices and sandalwood. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity and a rounded texture. The fruit seems to be finally drying…

Three Vertical Tastings (Sep 2004)

(44% cabernet sauvignon, 43% merlot and 13% petit verdot) Medium ruby-red. Flamboyant aromas of smoky black cherry, beefsteak tomato, roasted herbs, espresso, underbrush and truffle. Smooth and fat, with sweet dark berry flavors and lush texture, if not the normal clarity of Lagrange. Finishes with tongue-coating tannins that arrive late. Just now reaching its peak….

Lagrange 1959-2015 (Dec 2020)

The 2002 Lagrange was picked 1 to 14 October. The nose, like many this vintage, feels a little staid nowadays with dusky black fruit, cedar and earthy aromas. It is not particularly memorable. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins and shows more brightness than the nose. Kirsch, cedar and tobacco towards the finish…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

Bright ruby-red. Brisk aromas of currant, cedar and minerals. Firmly built, complex and aromatic, with lovely flavor definition and excellent palate coverage. Finishes with mouthcoating tannins and very good length. An excellent vintage for Lagrange. In comparison to this wine, the young 2004 seems more medicinal and austere, with a larger structure.
