2013 Bordeaux: Walking the Tightrope (Apr 2014)

The 2013 Tronquoy Lalande is a bit compact, but is nevertheless quite pretty, as the flavors are subtle and nicely delineated. Dark fruit, wild flowers, spices menthol and new leather all add complexity on the close. Sweet floral notes and a burst of red fruit add an exotic flair on the perfumed, highly expressive finish….

2011 Bordeaux from the Bottle (Jul 2014)

Bright ruby. Sappy, straightforward aromas and flavors of medicinal red cherry, herbs, cola and spices. The smooth finish shows decent texture and an aromatic quality to the spicy red fruit and earth flavors.

The Comedown: Bordeaux 2011 Ten-Years-On (Apr 2022)

The 2011 Prieuré-Lichine does not quite have the complexity and clarity of its peers, touches of graphite and pencil box, though it does cohere with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins, quite peppery in style, moderate weight though it lacks a bit of flair towards the finish. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On…

2001 and 2000 Red Burgundies (Mar 2003)

Bright medium red. Deeply spicy, superripe red fruits on the nose. Rich, broad and oaky, with a sappiness of fruit and depth of flavor not shown by the wines from Aloxe-Corton. Grew brighter as it opened in the glass, showing noteworthy power and good definition. Finishes with fine tannins and almost exotic sweetness.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Full ruby. Black raspberry, mocha, minerals, graphite and nutty oak on the superripe nose. Extravagantly rich and sweet in the mouth without coming off as heavy. This boasts extraordinary fruit intensity and verve (it’s hard to imagine cabernet franc better than this), and finishes with great palate-staining persistence. But this powerfully tannic wine may already…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The 1982 La Mission Haut-Brion is very similar to the one tasted in Hong Kong. Quite exotic on the nose, much more than Haut-Brion. There is that signature eucalyptus touch on the nose mixed with plenty of black fruit, though it lacks the pedigree of the First Growth. The palate is powerful with pliant tannins,…
