Northern Rhône: Solid ’14 Reds and Outstanding ’15 Whites (Jul 2017)

Bright purple. Vibrant aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, licorice and candied violet on the highly perfumed nose. Fleshy, seamless and energetic on the palate, offering juicy blackberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors that deepen and become sweeter on the back half. Closes on a smoky note, delivering building tannins, strong persistence and lingering…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The 2012 Climens was tasted from two bottles, the first weirdly green. The second was an absolute joy. Well-defined on the nose, it offers lovely beeswax, honeysuckle, jasmine and yellow flowers. The palate is very pure with fine weight, quite tangy, lightly spiced with a pretty marmalade-tinged finish. A very commendable Sauternes in context of…

The DBs: Bordeaux 2016 In Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Pavie Decesse, matured in 100% new oak for 24 months, has a glorious bouquet of well-defined kirsch, blueberry, crème de cassis, dark chocolate and crushed violet aromas that explode from the glass. There’s no holding back here. The palate is medium-bodied and quite pure, offering sappy black fruit, a fine bead of acidity…

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Pavie-Decesse pulses with energy, tension and pure class. Inky red and purplish berry fruit, pomegranate, chocolate, lavender and spice all run through this super-expressive Saint-Émilion. Dark and unctuous in the glass, but also very much medium in body, the 2016 is super refined and elegant. Silky tannins, pulsing, saline minerality and a sense…

Bordeaux 2011: Tales of Tannins and Terroir (May 2012)

Medium-deep ruby. Captivating nose combines red fruits, mocha and aromatic herbs. Light and lively on the palate, with good precision to the red fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes with lovely length and persistent mineral tang. This refined, nicely balanced midweight will be an extremely impressive debut for this new property, which is owned by Anthony…

The Best New Wines from Australia (Jul 2004)

Deep ruby-red. Cassis, plum, cherry and eucalyptus on the nose, along with strong oak notes of tar, chocolate and baking spices. Fat and concentrated, with cassis, blackberry and spicy oak flavors framed by harmonious acidity. Nicely sweetened but not overwhelmed by the wood element. Just a hint of herbacity held my score down.
