Vintage Retrospective: The 2001 Napa Valley Cabernets (Jun 2020)

Bright, full ruby-red. Dark, reticent scents of blackberry, cassis, licorice, mocha, toffee and minerals. Broad, dense, dark and savory on entry, then thick and vibrant in the middle palate, and still quite youthful in spite of its breadth and richness. Shows little easy sweetness but really spreads out to saturate the palate without leaving any…

Umbria – New Releases (Jun 2016)

Medium dark yellow. Ripe aromas of banana, caramel apple and pineapple, complemented by sweet spices. Concentrated and dense, offering tropical fruit and vanillin flavors enlivened by a brisk, fresher citrus quality. Intense, ripe and long, but finishes with a bitter oaky edge that needs food.

The 2014 & 2013 White Burgundies (Sep 2015)

Pale, bright yellow. Buoyant aromas of yellow fruits. Fat, sweet and easygoing, if perhaps a bit obvious for Folatières. Carillon noted that the 2013s gained in finesse during their months in cuves but I find that this wine lacks the cru’s typical subtlety and floral lift. A touch phenolic on the back end.

The Riches and Richness of Chateauneuf-du-Pape (Dec 2019)

Dark shimmering ruby. Spice-accented raspberry and cherry scents are complicated by hints of incense, pungent flowers and smoky minerals. Sweet and seamless in texture, offering deep-pitched red and dark berry liqueur, fruitcake and candied lavender flavors that become more lively as the wine stretches out. Concentrated but vibrant in style, delivering solid finishing thrust on…

On the Tuscan Coast: New Releases (Oct 2015)

The 2013 Le Difese is absolutely gorgeous. Sweet, layered and highly expressive, the 2013 possesses superb balance. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, mint, cedar and spice take on a translucent sense of expression. This is one of the best versions of Le Difese I can remember tasting,

2014 Chianti Classico: Better Late Than Never (Oct 2016)

The 2014 Batàr, Querciabella’s Chardonnay/Pinot Bianco blend, comes across as a bit light in this vintage. The flavors are bright, lifted and nicely articulated throughout, with plenty of citrus and white flower notes. I find the mid-palate somewhat lacking in depth today, which also results in the oak standing out, even though the 2014 only…
