Brilliance in Napa Valley: 2016 & 2015 Cabernets (Jan 2018)

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Cor Leonis is deep and unctuous in the glass. Black cherry jam, crème de cassis, lavender, menthol and exotic spice all run through this rich, sumptuous wine. Silky tannins play off the wine’s explosive personality nicely. The 2016 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine.

Bordeaux 2011: Tales of Tannins and Terroir (May 2012)

Good full red. Spicy, oak-influenced aromas of luscious ripe plum, mocha and coffee. Juicy and sweet in the mouth, with harmonious acidity framing the chewy red fruit and dried violet flavors. Finishes with serious, slightly dusty tannins and excellent length. Impressively fruity, but I worry about this wine’s tannic bite. Hopefully, the tannins with smooth…

Tuscany New Releases, Part 1 (Mar 2020)

Just bottled, the 2017 Saffredi is a huge, unctuous wine that captures all the natural richness of the year in spades. Rich and super-concentrated, with huge fruit, the 2017 is going to need a number of years to shed some of its baby fat, but it is a superb wine in the making. Coffee, licorice…

Germany’s Charming 2002 Vintage (Jan 2004)

Smells of redcurrant jelly, peach jam and fresh lemon. Brightly citric, honeyed and jammy in its ultra-ripe fruit concentration, and very slightly caramelized, this spreads over the palate and into every corner of the mouth. As with a number of wines here today, this has a decidedly saline, briny mineral expression, which complements the concentrated…

2016 Chianti Classico – A Modern Day Benchmark (Aug 2019)

The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardo is a pretty, open-knit wine. Sweet dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice and menthol are nicely delineated in the 2015, a Riserva that is unusually translucent for the vintage. This is an especially refreshing, mid-weight wine for the year, with a good deal of savory and earthy Sangiovese character laced…
