2014 Red Burgundies: Delicious Terroir-Driven Midweights (Mar 2017)

Modestly saturated pale red. Inviting, complex aromas of dark cherry, blueberry, blackberry and graphite minerality. At once rich and powerful; in a rather masculine style but without any hard edges. Finishes very long, with tannins nicely supported by the wine’s mid-palate material. But this grand cru is still very young and in need of patience.

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(13.7% alcohol, after multiple tiny additions of sugar totaling just 0.2% to prolong the fermentation, according to Anne Gros; aged in 70% new oak): Medium red. Fresh, pure but reticent aromas of raspberry, spices and earth. Very ripe but initially reserved, hinting at wild raspberry, soil and dark chocolate. Aeration brought building inner-mouth perfume, revealing…

Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Grand-Puy Ducasse has a comparatively opulent bouquet with black cherries, cassis and figgy aromas. Perhaps it was picked a little late. The palate is medium-bodied with an almost Rhône-like entry. A bit animally and spicy, there's impressive weight and concentration, with just a bit of warmth on the finish. Again, this is another…

Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Grand Puy Ducasse is elegant, polished and sophisticated, just as it was en primeur. Dark cherry, mocha, licorice and crushed rose petals are some of the many notes that open up. Medium in body, with terrific energy and tons of class, Grand Puy Ducasse is very pretty and especially refined in 2020.

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comprises just one used barrel this year. It has a very reserved, almost austere bouquet that feels a little aloof after the fireworks of Moreau’s raft of Chassagne Premier Crus. But that’s Bâtard for you. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, fresh and taut…

Masseto Retrospective at the Country Music Hall of Fame (Jan 2020)

Rich, sumptuous and exotically beautiful, the 2007 Masseto is off the charts. The year got off to a very warm, dry start, but then cooler weather in August allowed for the vines to find their balance. All the best elements of Masseto and the house style come together in this truly memorable wine. Dark red…
