Napa Valley’s Extraordinary 2016 Cabernets (Dec 2018)

The highlight in this range today, the 2016 Cariad is utterly magnificent. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot give the wine soaring aromatic intensity and striking savoriness to play off the racy, forward fruit. Time in barrel has done wonders to meld all the elements together. Today, the Cariad is dense, explosive and super-expressive. And yet…

Napa Valley’s Extraordinary 2016 Cabernets (Dec 2018)

Colgin’s 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill is fabulous. Rich, dense and beautifully textured, the 2016 possesses tremendous nuance and pure class. An exotic mélange of super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice, rose petal and mocha develop effortlessly, but it is the wine’s balance that really stands out most. I imagine the 2016 will give readers a…

2016 White Burgundy: Excellent, But Complicated (Sep 2018)

Ripe stone fruits complemented by nutty nuances on the nose. Plush and fine-grained, with its stone fruit flavors currently overshadowed by nuts, earth and salty minerality. Rich and mouthfilling for young Corton-Charlemagne but I don’t find quite the verve or grip shown by a barrel sample a year ago. Incidentally, the acidity here is 3.8…

Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village has quite a striking, almost rambunctious bouquet with dark cherries, cassis and blue fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sensual ripe tannins, plush and sweet with a slightly candied, plummy, dark chocolate finish. This will require three or four years in bottle just to cohere and develop secondary nuances.

Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Village has a taut and strict nose, well defined, green apple mixed with subtle petrichor/wet pavement scents. The palate is well balanced with lemon zest, lime and a dab of ginger, gently building towards a nicely composed and delineated finish. This should give 8-10 years’ drinking pleasure.

Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

The 2021 Pommard Clos de la Commaraine is a monopole owned by the domaine due to be overlooked by a luxury hotel currently under construction. This is completely de-stemmed. Two bottles were opened as I was not happy with the first – and a good decision as the second is much fresher. Quite earthy in…
