2003 and 2002 Red Burgundies (Mar 2005)

Medium red. Blacker fruits on the nose, lifted by violet and mineral nuances. A step beyond the Echezeaux in sweetness, texture and power. Fuller and more complex, with sappy dark berries complicated by leather and minerals. Finishes with round, sweet tannins and excellent length.

A Century of…Fives (Jun 2025)

The 2005 Pichon Baron was tasted against the 1995 and is a far superior vintage. Director Christian Seely commented that there was about half the volume in this vintage due to selection. This has a mineral-driven bouquet with layered black fruit, wild mint and light graphite scents giving way to touches of black truffle. The…

A Century of…Fives (Jun 2025)

Even those who dislike this wine had a soft spot for the 1985 Léoville Las-Cases, which has always been atypical in its sensuality and generosity. This bottle really shows its mettle. At almost 40 years old it has stunning delineation on the nose, showing copious red fruit laced with crushed stone and wilted rose petals…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Clerc Milon is another juicy, fruit-driven wine from the Mouton Rothschild team. A veritable explosion of aromas and flavors makes a strong first impression. Lavender, spice, violet, mint and a array of blue and black stone fruits build into the racy, exotic finish. In 2014, the Cabernet Sauvignon is up and the Merlot…

Test of Endurance: Bordeaux 2014 Ten Years On (Mar 2024)

The 2014 Clerc Milon has a vivacious and forward bouquet with cedar and graphite-infused black fruit, violet traces emerging with time, oozing with class. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, graphite once more defining the appellation. It’s tensile and almost citrus-fresh on the finish. Plenty of energy is evident in this Pauillac, which should…

Fairest of Them All: Cos d’Estournel 1928 – 2015 (Oct 2018)

The 2003 Cos d’Estournel revels in a vintage that shone in Saint-Estèphe. In some ways it is a prototype of the 2009 however, the 2003 feels more natural, more a product of the growing season than a premeditated crowd-pleaser like the 2009. It has that almost gregarious bouquet with plush raspberry ripple, vanilla pod, crème…
