2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)

The 2022 Les Cruzelles is ample, rich and explosive, just as it was en primeur. Dark-toned fruit, gravel, incense, crushed rocks, lavender and dried herbs soar out of the glass. The long, sustained finish suggests the 2022 will enjoy a long and rewarding life. A wine of substance and heft, Les Cruzelles is seriously impressive….

Test of Endurance: Bordeaux 2014 Ten Years On (Mar 2024)

The 2014 Angludet has a mature but fresh bouquet with effervescent red berry fruit, marmalade and light cedar-y scents. The palate is medium-bodied and lactic on the entry. It’s missing a bit of freshness, with touches of leather and cooked meats towards the finish. I would drink this sooner rather than later. Tasted non-blind at…

Vintage Port – The 2016 Declaration (Jun 2018)

In 2016 Taylor’s began picking in Vargellas on 17 September, followed by Pinhão Valley estate on 23 and 26 September. The 2016 Vintage Port has an aristocratic bouquet with tight wound aromas of blackberry, bilberry, crushed stone, black olive and a light, marine-tinged element, perhaps almost peat-like. The palate is just beautiful with fine, chiseled…

Vintage Port – The 2016 Declaration (Jun 2018)

The 2016 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port represents the best production from the Quinta da Madalena vineyard, where picking did not begin until 28 September. It perhaps just lacks the same intensity and complexity of its peers with black truffle and smoke aromas infusing the black fruit. The palate is well balanced with a spicy, stem…

Dive In: Cantenac Brown 1978-2018 (Oct 2022)

The 1998 Cantenac Brown has a very different blend to post-2000 vintages with much more Merlot, here, 49%. It has a strong menthol note on the nose that obscures the terroir expression, perhaps even difficult to define it as a Bordeaux. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins, angular and slightly bitter, with some attenuation…

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Currant, game, cedar, smoke and nutty oak on the nose. Structured and tightly wrapped, but intensely flavored and shapely, with a subtle sweetness. Finishes with firm tannins and noteworthy persistence.
