South Africa: 2021 New Releases from the Cape (Nov 2021)

The 2019 Sémillon, one of my favorite cuvées from this producer, has a wonderful bouquet of peach skin and orange blossom scents, all extremely well defined. The balanced palate offers superb concentration on the entry, flavors of praline mixed with citrus fruit and almond, and an almost resinous note toward the finish. It’s tempting to…

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Weathers the Challenges and Changes (Oct 2021)

Glistening ruby. Spice-accented dark berries and cherry on the nose, along with suggestions of garrigue and smoky minerals. Juicy blackberry, cherry cola and lavender flavors provide very good palate coverage and turn spicier with air. The floral note carries through a clinging, energetic finish shaped by smooth, well-knit tannins.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2022: Bring It On (Jun 2024)

The 2018 Châteauneuf-du-Pape presents a complex aromatic profile consisting of ripe strawberry, raspberry, cranberry, rose petal and licorice. Polished and harmonious, it offers excellent flavor concentration and closes with good grip on the savory finish.

Northern Rhône: Where Diversity Ignites the Senses (Mar 2024)

The 2022 Condrieu is adorable. Ripe apricot, white peach, melon, spring blossom and yellow apple give this medium- to full-bodied Condrieu tons of character. Toe to toe with the equally delicious 2020 rendition, the 2022 Condrieu combines great energy and juicy ripe fruits with soft yet refreshing acidity.

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune Vergelesses 1er Cru has a forward, opulent bouquet of red cherries, cranberry and light orange peel aromas that burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and demonstrates a little more new oak at the moment, but that will be subsumed. Finishes with ample, spicy red fruit that lingers nicely for 30…

Sancerre: Combat Fatigue (Aug 2024)

The 2022 Sancerre is a gentle, subtle style with limited aromatic excitement. While this is a warm, dry vintage, it remains at 12.5% alcohol, and the aromatics sit in the citrus and green spectrum. There is limited concentration and short length.
