Léoville-Poyferré 1936-2018 (Sep 2022)

The 2008 Léoville-Poyferré has long been one of the best Saint-Julien’s of the vintage. It has a vibrant, exquisitely delineated bouquet with precise black fruit, cedar and hints of liquorice that unfold seductively. The oak here is beautifully enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with melted tannins, a fine bead of acidity, very harmonious with pure…

2008 Bordeaux: A Day In A Life (Feb 2018)

The 2008 Léoville-Poyferré has a well-defined, quite precise and energetic bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and pencil lead aromas. This is very focused and engaging. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, graphite and pencil box aromas, harmonious in the mouth with a long and refined finish. What a fabulous Saint Julien from Didier Cuvelier, one…

The 2008 Clarets (Jul 2011)

Red-ruby. Aromas of mulberry, redcurrant, mocha, sassafras and spicy oak, with an attractive floral topnote. Juicy, suave and fine-grained, with a repeating floral quality giving the wine lovely inner-mouth perfume. Very sexy oak here. Finishes with firm but suave tannins and excellent dusty persistence.

The 2005 Beychevelle is improving in bottle. Quite intense on the nose, it offers slightly darker fruit than previous bottles, with cedar and a touch of espresso, though there is still a little rusticity. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a rich, slightly muscular entry, a smear of dark chocolate and a structured, grippy finish….

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

Olivier Berrouet turned out a fabulous Petrus in 2019. A gorgeous, expansive wine, the 2019 opens beautifully over time. There is a feeling of radiance in the 2019 that is impossible to miss. Hints of rose petal, lavender, mint and cinnamon meld effortlessly into a core of red/purplish fruit. At 14.8%, the alcohol is high,…

Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Pétrus is relatively flamboyant on the nose with gregarious black cherries, raspberry coulis scents mixed with autumn bonfire and fireside hearth. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, well balanced, quite fresh with a poised and delineated finish. I adore the pepperiness that lingers in the mouth, a multifaceted Pomerol with a…
