1998 and 1997 Red Burgundies (Mar 2000)

Full red-ruby. Roasted aromas of game, tar, iris and tobacco. Supple and thick on the palate, with an intriguing smoky/vegetal/autumnal aspect that reminded me of Clos des Lambrays. Comes across as considerably richer than the DRC ’97 Grands-Echezeaux, but this also finishes with a slight dry edge.

1998 and 1997 Red Burgundies (Mar 2000)

Full red. Superripe aromas of redcurrant, plum and tobacco. Nicely concentrated and juicy, with smoke and herbal nuances. Finishes with good length and dusty tannins, along with a faint herbaceousness that I did not notice in a bottle tasted a year ago just after the mise.

1998 and 1997 Red Burgundies (Mar 2000)

Full red-ruby. Aromas of plum syrup, currant, tar, smoke and underbrush; a bit more evolved than La Tache. Big but utterly silky in the mouth; boasts the velvety, seamless texture of the vintage’s best examples. Finishes very long, with lush tannins. Will this grand cru show more fruit complexity before it loses its freshness?

Grand Cru Culinary Wine Festival 2017 (Nov 2017)

The 1997 La Tâche is a very pretty wine for current drinking. There is some variation between the several bottles I taste, but the conclusion is the same: the 1997 is a wine to drink over the near and medium-term, before the fruit dries out too much. Although its balance is somewhat precarious, the 1997…

1998 and 1997 Red Burgundies (Mar 2000)

Full red-ruby. Expressive, slightly roasted aromas of strawberry, plum, currant, licorice, roasted nuts, game, mocha and smoke. Big, round and complex; thick and ripe. Like a couple of the preceding wines, the fruit is somewhat suppressed today. But this offers the most texture of the DRC ’97s to this point. Finishes ripe and very long.
