Brunello di Montalcino: The 2012 Brunellos & 2011 Riservas (Mar 2017)

Bright deep red. Youthfully reticent nose offers aromas of strawberry, raspberry, minerals and violets. Clean, fresh and juicy, with knockout inner-mouth perfume to the red berry and cherry flavors. Finishes long, vibrant and multilayered, with a delightfully refined mouth feel. An early candidate for the wine with the finest tannins of the vintage.

Montevertine: Le Pergole Torte 1980-2012 (Jan 2016)

Today, the 2010 Le Pergole Torte is lifted, gracious and quite inward, all of which suggest it has closed down significantly over the last few years. Crushed rose petals, sweet red berries, mint and white pepper all lift from the glass. The purity and textural brilliance here are both striking, but readers will have to…

Vinous Table: Tuscan Dinner @ 67 Pall Mall, London, UK (May 2023)

The 2010 Le Pergole Torte from Montevertine surveys the heavyweights in the flight from the likes of Costanti and Soldera and says, “Bring it on.” It elicits the word “wow” on the nose, equipped with breath-taking purity and killer delineation and focus, aromatics piled high with dark berry fruit, pinecones, cedar, a hint of Valrhona…

2010 Brunello di Montalcino: A Promise Fulfilled (Feb 2015)

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille is darker, richer and more voluptuous than the Rennina. There the flavors are dark and assertive, with notable mid-palate richness and overall volume that flows through to the finish. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and cloves all fill out the wine’s broad-shouldered frame nicely. Hints of mocha, chocolate,…

Focus on Tuscany: The 2009s and 2008s (Aug 2011)

The 2009 Guidalberto flows across the palate with layers of radiant red fruit. This is another striking, supple Guidalberto loaded with personality. Stylistically it is quite close to the 2007, but with perhaps a touch less body but equally silky, polished tannins. Freshly cut roses, spices and a burst of pure red berries add nuance…

Brunello di Montalcino 2008 and 2007 Riserva (Jul 2013)

Lively bright red-ruby. Subtle aromas of red cherry, dried flowers, tarragon and fresh fennel. Then bright and juicy on the palate, with expressive red cherry, licorice and spicy flavors that pick up a note of underbrush with aeration. The finish is moderately long and bright. I’d drink this attractive midweight over the next eight to…
